Answering a question by the Russian journalist Alexey Bukalov, Pope Francis had this to say about the Byzantine liturgy.

Alexey Bukalov: Buonasera Santo Padre. Santo Padre, tornando all’ecumenismo: oggi gli ortodossi festeggiano i 1.025 anni del cristianesimo, ci sono grandissimi festeggiamenti in molte capitali. Se vuole fare un commento su questo fatto, sarò felice a questo proposito. Grazie.
Papa Francesco: Nelle Chiese ortodosse, hanno conservato quella pristina liturgia, tanto bella. Noi abbiamo perso un po’ il senso dell’adorazione. Loro lo conservano, loro lodano Dio, loro adorano Dio, cantano, il tempo non conta. Il centro è Dio, e questa è una ricchezza che vorrei dire in questa occasione in cui Lei mi fa questa domanda. Una volta, parlando della Chiesa occidentale, dell’Europa occidentale, soprattutto la Chiesa più cresciuta, mi hanno detto questa frase: “Lux ex oriente, ex occidente luxus”. Il consumismo, il benessere, ci hanno fatto tanto male. Invece voi conservate questa bellezza di Dio al centro, la referenza. Quando si legge Dostoevskij – io credo che per tutti noi deve essere un autore da leggere e rileggere, perché ha una saggezza – si percepisce qual è l’anima russa, l’anima orientale. E’ una cosa che ci farà tanto bene. Abbiamo bisogno di questo rinnovamento, di questa aria fresca dell’Oriente, di questa luce dell’Oriente. Giovanni Paolo II lo aveva scritto nella sua Lettera. Pope Francis: In the Orthodox Churches they have conserved that pristine liturgy, no? So beautiful. We [i.e., the Latin Christians] have lost a bit the sense of adoration, they conserve it, they praise God, they adore God, they sing, time does not count. The center is God and that is a richness that I would like to emphasize on this occasion as you ask me this question. Once, speaking of the Western Church, of Western Europe, especially the Church that has grown most, they said this phrase to me: “Lux ex oriente, ex occidente luxus.” [“Light from the East, from the West, luxury.”] Consumerism, well-being, have done us so much harm. Instead, you keep this beauty of God at the center, the reference. When one reads Dostoyevsky — I believe that for us all he must be an author to read and reread, because he has wisdom — one perceives what the Russian spirit is, the Eastern spirit. It’s something that will do us so much good. We are in need of this renewal, of this fresh air of the East, of this light from the East. John Paul II wrote it in his Letter.
