On Thursday, 22nd June, 2023, the Apostolic Nuncio to Malta, H.E. Mons. Savio Hon Tai-fai, accompanied by Rev. Fr Claude Portelli, paid a courtesy visit to the church of ‘Our Lady of Damascus’, in Valletta. They were met by Rev. Papàs Martin Zammit, parish priest, and Rev. Jesmond Schembri, deacon. Papàs Martin referred to the origins of this church which go back to the arrival of the Knights of St. John in Malta in 1530 and the contingent of approximately 500 Greeks from Rhodes and other Greek islands who accompanied them. During the visit, special attention was reserved to the miraculous icon of Our Lady of Damascus (Damaskini) and the icon of Our Lady of Mercy (Eleimonitria). H.E. the Apostolic Nuncio expressed his admiration for these two historic icons. He also accepted the invitation to attend a Sunday Divine Liturgy in this church in the near future.
